In an attempt for all of our community to gain some knowledge of what we offer our students at Benjamin Logan we will be highlighting different departments in our schools. The Benjamin Logan Local School District offers an array of courses and programs so we can meet the needs of all our students.
Our district continues to provide a stimulating learning environment for all our students to be successful. As proof of our commitment to provide a first-rate education, our district earned the designation of "Excellent" from The Ohio Department of Education for the 2008-2009 school year.
This initial article will highlight our Special Education Department. I have asked Special Education Director Mr. Scott Frederick, to inform you of the programs that are available to students with special needs. Please feel free to contact Mr. Frederick at 937-593-9211 if you have any questions.

Benjamin Logan Special Education Department
The Benjamin Logan Local School District's Special Education Department has shown much growth over the past several years. The educators, administrators and support personnel in our school district are committed to working closely with our residents in order to provide services and opportunities for all students to be successful. Presently, our school system supports 265 students who have been determined eligible for special education support services.
Our district provides numerous services for the identified children. We offer Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy. Currently, our district has an Educational Audiologist on consultation for Hearing Impaired Students, Teacher of the Visually Impaired to teach braille, and a Mobility Specialist for instructing blind students on how to maneuver around the school and in the community. We also contract services for Work Study and Transitional Services for our students in the upper grade levels. While these related service personnel might not be on campus full time, communication between them and our employees is the key to providing effective services.
The Benjamin Logan Local School District is committed to establishing the least restrictive learning environment for all students. We serve students with various disabilities, such as Autism, Cognitive Disability, Deaf-Blindness, Deafness, Emotional Disturbance, Hearing Impairment, Multiple Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairment, Other Health Impairment (Minor & Major), Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech & Language Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury and Visual Impairment. We serve these disabilities in placements on and off campus. In collaboration with the Logan County Schools and the Logan County Educational Service Center, we are able to meet the needs of these students. For instance, we try our best to utilize your generous tax dollars wisely by sharing in the costs to operate specialized units. Benjamin Logan currently houses the MS Multiple Disabilities Unit, ES Multiple Disabilities Unit and an ES Structure Classroom. Indian Lake houses the Emotionally Disturbed Units at their HS and MS and the HS Multiple Disabilities Unit. The ESC and the local Special Education Directors of each district work closely together to supervise these units.
New technology is being incorporated into our classrooms this coming February. Student Response Systems are hand held remotes for each student and when a teacher directs a question in class, each student will enter their answer via remote. Each student's answer will be assessed via the classroom computer and the teachers will be able to see which student is grasping the curriculum and which student needs some sort of intervention. Our Intervention Specialists will be receiving the training on this program in early February and it should be in the student's hands by the end of the month. It is our department's intent to always work closely with you. You are a vital element of your child's education and we want you to be a member of our TEAM! Let's make your child's education meaningful, while making a lifetime of pleasant memories.
Sincerely,
Scott Frederick
