POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS PROGRAM

Ninth grade (freshman) = 0-5 high school credits Tenth grade (sophomore) = 6-12 high school credits Eleventh grade (junior) = 13-18 high school credits Twelfth grade (senior) = 19+ high school credits Pre-PSEO counseling services must be provided to applicants and their parent/guardian prior to participation in the program. This program is held the last week of February and will address both the benefits and possible risks which may be experienced in the PSEO program.

PSEO ELIGIBILITY 1. The student must be enrolled at Benjamin Logan High School in pursuit of a high school diploma. 2. The student must meet enrollment standards of the college or technical school. 3. Based on the current 4 period block day, the student must arrange sufficient time in the schedule to allow for PSEO courses. 4. The student must be carrying a "B" average at the high school level in order to take a course in the same subject at the college level. 5. The student and parent/guardian must inform the Guidance Office no later than March 30 of their intent to participate in the program the following school year.

PSEO ENROLLMENT OPTIONS OPTION A Students enroll for college credit only. Parents are responsible for all college costs associated with the program (tuition, lab fees, books, and supplies). Students may be released from school partial days, but must be scheduled for a minimum 6 credits at the high school. Option A is for college credit only. OPTION B Students enroll for college and high school credit. Under Option B, the cost of tuition and books is paid by the State Board of Education and Benjamin Logan Local Schools. All other costs associated with college enrollment are assumed by the parent/student. Students will be released from high school to attend college classes full or partial days. The option choice, A or B must be made at the time of enrollment in the PSEO program, usually by March 30.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS & RISKS OF PARTICIPATION IN THE PSEO PROGRAM POTENTIAL BENEFITS: 1. PSEO expands the curriculum available to students. 2. Students experience opportunities to study "in-depth" in areas of special interest or need. 3. Both Options A and B allow students to earn transferable college credit prior to high school graduation. 4. Financial support for taking college courses in a definite plus. In Option B the overall college costs may be reduced and students may earn the college degree sooner. 5. PSEO allows students to experience college-level work prior to making the commitment to full time college enrollment after high school graduation. POTENTIAL RISKS: 1. Students will experience increased responsibility for learning since they are less likely to have the personal encouragement from college instructors that is common in the high school setting. 2. The increase in study time demands for college courses may reduce opportunities for participating in high school activities and/or part-time jobs. Colleges generally expect students to invest at least two hours of study for each hour of class meeting time. 3. Both options represent increased overall educational costs beyond the full time high school price tag. Option A will involve tuition fees, books, transportation, etc. while Option B will include the cost of transportation, food, and consumable supplies. 4. Option A is not part of the high school record. With Option B, the grades and credits for college course work are included in the high school GPA and total credit calculations. This has potential for either positive or negative outcomes depending on student success in college courses. 5. Families will experience increased travel demands and risks since colleges rarely call calamity days. 6. Social discomfort may be experienced because a variety of age groups will be represented in college classes. Social situations may arise that are awkward or inappropriate for a high school student. 7. Athletic eligibility status will require an interim grade from the college instructor. It is the student's responsibility to submit athletic eligibility forms to college personnel and see that grade information is returned to the high school athletic director.

PSEO STUDENT INFORMATION TEAM TIME Whether you are a full or part-time PSEO student, you will need to keep in touch with your team time teacher. Seniors will need to keep current on their career passport, which is a requirement for graduation. Your team time teacher is also a good source of important information you will need to finalize your graduation plans. CREDITS If you are taking a PSEO course that meets one or more of your core graduation requirements, be certain that the college hours of credit is equivalent to the high school credits you need. If you are unsure about this situation, please see Miss Brown in the Guidance office. GENERAL INFORMATION Please check the guidance department information on the high school website at least once per week. You will find a variety of information that you will need as you prepare for scheduling classes for next semester or next year. Seniors will want to watch carefully for critical dates and information needed in preparation for graduation.
